The bell above the door rang as Michelle pushed through and into the world of Madam Fates Emporium of Curiosities. A nudging at the back of Michelle’s mind kept her feet turning down Starlit Avenue during her evening run that she finally turned the knob of the door and entered.
The smell of wood shavings, incense, and fresh dirt tickled her nose as a noise behind the counter drew her attention.
“Hello, dear.” A masterfully aged female voice spoke. “I’m just fixing my stool, I’ll pop up in a minute. Have a look around.”
“Okay…” Michelle rolled up on her tiptoes trying to see the body of the voice, but to no avail.
The shop was full of everything you could think of and then some. Rocks and crystals suspended from the ceiling. Beautiful wood carvings lined the walls as well as a full size-grizzly bear commanding the corner with its watchful eyes. Everywhere Michelle’s eyes traveled, there was something beautiful to be seen.
“He doesn’t bite.”
Michelle screamed and jumped away nearly knocking a table over. “I’m so sorry, I didn’t break anything did I?”
The collection of wrinkles that could only be described as an elderly woman bounced a couple steps to the table, little bells on her clothing also enchanting the moment. “I don’t think so. Were you trying to break something?”
“No, no, no. I just wasn’t expecting you to be there.”
“Ah! This old party trick!” Madam Fate sprinted to the back and leaned against a door frame. “Not bad, huh?” She let out a laugh.
Michelle stood there puzzling out what just happened. “How did you do that? You were so quick, and you didn’t make a sound.”
“It’s quite easy to be whatever you want to be. If you want to be quick and quiet, be quick and quiet.” She walked back to the front and the little bells chimed with each step. “You seem to be someone that is looking for something that is not easily seen.”
“Well, I’ve actually passed by here a number of times, I just never came in until tonight.”
“Yes, I’ve seen you gawking through my windows and leaving little fingerprints on the glass.”
“Sorry, I just can’t help myself sometimes.” She looked around the room again. “Do you make all this stuff?”
“Stuff? No. Art, yes. What you see is just my creative expression.” She leaned in and whispered, “If there’s something you like, I’ll make you a deal on it. How about Bruno the bear? He comes apart like a jigsaw puzzle. Only way I could get him through the door.”
“Oh, um…” Michelle took a few steps away and fiddled with a carved wood chime.
“What do you make? What comes through that curious little mind of yours?” Madam Fate came closer.
“I’m not really that creative when it comes to making things. I can do jigsaw puzzles.”
“Then the bear it is, will it be cash, card, or payments. Bruno is quite the charmer, by the way.”
“Oh, no. I couldn’t. I don’t have the space for him.”
“Well, surely you must do something creative?” She looked at Michelle.
“I did some jewelry years ago in college. It helped pass the time at night.”
“Then make some and bring them here. I’ll sell them for you! People are going to love it! I can see it now, I’ll get you a table set up over here and I’ll go through my tablecloths and find you a nice one. It’s going to be great. Bring them to me in two weeks, okay?” The elderly woman grabbed Michelle by the wrist and pushed her out the door and closed it behind her.
Michelle just looked around as the shop lights turned off except a soft glowing lamp near the rear of the store.
Two weeks pass as Michelle again stood in front of the storefront. This time, she held a shoe box delicately in her hands. As she looked down at it, a voice from the store broke her derailing train of thought.
“Are you just going to stand out there all night? Or are you going to show me the pretties you made?” Inside, Michelle went to the counter and slid the box onto the surface with care.
Madam Fate popped up on her stool and snatched the box. “Let’s see what we got here?”
After many ‘Oh, this is pretty.’ and ‘This is wonderful.’ She closed the box and looked at Michelle.
“What can you tell me about this one?” She laid down a set of simple, yet attractive earrings.
“Well, I thought that maybe this could be like a past, present, future representative? Or maybe something like that? I don’t know, I just went with the flow.”
“The flow? You mean you accessed the mother-load of inspiration and channeled it through your body and survived? That’s amazing! You’ve just seized your fate from The Three Sisters and claimed back your life. You know, most people don’t even know about their fate or the possibility of fate even existing. The Three Sisters are the ones that can shape your life if you don’t take action and mold it yourself.” She pointed to the wooden bear. “You see Bruno there? He can’t change his fate because he isn’t alive anymore. I mean he could when he was a tree, but, he’s a bear now. You see what I mean?”
“Not really.” Michelle said.
She grabbed Michelle’s hands and looked her in the eyes. “There is always hope for you if you believe there is some left. The Sisters don’t cut threads being woven. They might snip a few loose threads around the edges, but they don’t bother the weaver at work.”
Michelle didn’t break eye contact. “I won’t let them.”
